THE 5 PILLARS OF ISLAM

THE 5 PILLARS OF ISLAM

Based on Abu Abder-rahman, Abdullah Ibn Umar Ibn Al-Khattab : I heard the Messenger of God say:

” The Foundations of Islam are five in number: The attestation that it is not of divinity except God and Muhammad is His Messenger, the performance of prayer, the payment of Zakat (the purifying social tax), the Pilgrimage to the Holy House and the fasting of the month of Ramadan”.

(Reported by Al-Boukhary and Muslim.)

Explanations – Significance of hadith:

This hadith is very important. It is one of the fundamental texts of Islam, and contains many legal rules. Indeed, it is a hadith that defines Islam, its foundations and all of its pillars that can also be found in the Koran.

What can be learned from the hadith and its good guidelines

Basics of Islam:

The envoy of God compares in this hadith, Islam – which brings man out of ungodliness, earns him access to Paradise and leads him away from hell – to a solidly built edifice that rests on solid foundations.

It shows that these foundations that support it are:

1- The attestation that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is His Messenger : This amounts to affirming the existence of God Most High, proclaiming His uniqueness, and adding faith to the prophecy of Muhammad and in its mission. This pillar represents the foundation that supports the rest of the pillars. Al Bazzar reported an authentic hadith, in which the Messenger of God said: ” He who certifies that there is no god but God will enter Paradise”.

2- Fulfillment of prayer: that is, to persevere in it, to fulfill it at its prescribed times, while respecting its conditions of validity, its pillars, its rules of politeness and its meritorious acts.

This is so that it bears fruit and has effect on the soul of the Muslim, and that the latter turns away from immoral and disavowable acts. God says:

“Do prayer correctly for prayer averts immoral and disavowed deeds” [ Sura 29 The Spider (Al-Ankabut) verse 45]

Furthermore, prayer is the symbol of the Muslim and the claim to fame of the believer. Muslim and others reported that the envoy of God said : ” Between the man, on the one hand, the Shirk (associationism) and Kufr (impiety), on the other hand, intercalates the renunciation of prayer”.

3- The payment of zakat (purifying social tax): This consists, for the Muslim who hasfrom a taxable level, to pay out a fixed amount of money that will go to the poor and its beneficiaries. God says about believers: “Those who give Zakat”(Surah 23, verse 4)</span > It also says: “In whose possessions there is a definite right”(Sura 70, verse 24)</ strong>. Zakat is an act of worship specific to goods and intended to achieve social justice, to end poverty and destitution, and to foster affection, compassion and respect among Muslims .

4- Pilgrimage: It consists of going to the Holy Mosque during the months of pilgrimage, namely Shawwal, Dhûlqi’da and the first ten days of Dhûl-hijja, and to perform the rites performed by the Messenger of God . Pilgrimage is an act of worship that requires both financial and physical effort. It allows the realization of many benefits beneficial to the individual and to society. It is also a huge Islamic gathering and a great opportunity for Muslims from all countries to meet.

Allah says about it: ” Lance among the people a call to invite them to the pilgrimage and they will come to you on foot or on any fine (light) mount, coming from all the most remote great roads, that they may witness things full of profit for them and that, in well-known days they pronounce the name of God (by immolation) on what We have given them as cattle. Eat of it and feed it to the unfortunate needy” </ p>

[Sura 22 The Pilgrimage, verses 27 and 28).

This is why the pilgrimage has a very great and abundant recompense; the Messenger of God said: “Pilgrimage free from all sin has no reward but Paradise”</strong > The pilgrimage was prescribed in the year 6 of the Hegira by the following verse : “People are bound to God to make the pilgrimage to the Sacred House, those who can afford it” (Surah 3, verse 97).

5- Fasting in the month of Ramadan: It was prescribed in the year 2 of the Hegira by the following verse:

“The month of Ramadan when the Quran was sent down as a good direction for the Humans and as clear proofs of good direction and perfect discernment. Let any of you who observe the birth of the month fast.” [Sura.2 Al Baqarah (the Cow) verse 185]

It is a worship that purifies the Ego, elevates the soul, and guarantees the health of the body. Whoever does it out of obedience to God and desire for His approval, his sins will be forgiven and he will open the way to Paradise. The envoy of God said: “Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan driven by his faith and in the hope of divine reward, God absolves him of all his past sins”.
